One payment, several invoices, and the other way round
One payment can pay several invoices, and one invoice can be paid in several payments. It works the same way for money you pay to suppliers.

Advance payments stay visible
When a customer pays in advance and there is no invoice to link it to yet, it is still recorded as a payment. It shows as an amount not yet linked until you use it.
